Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, -oecious suffix.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + -oecious suffix, in sense 1 after German autoecisch (1874 in the passage translated in quot. 1882, or earlier; 1866 as autöcisch (which is now the usual form): A. de Bary, in Monatsber. der K. Preussischen Akad. der Wissensch. zu Berlin 1865 32).
1. Mycology. Of parasitic fungi (esp. rusts and smuts): inhabiting the same host throughout their life. Cf. heteroecious adj. at hetero- comb. form .
