Etymology: < lord n. + -ling suffix1. Compare lording n.1In early use sometimes replacing the originally more common lording n.1, usually in later manuscripts of the same texts. N.E.D. (1903) also includes the sense ‘a kind of apple’, based on a mistranscription of quot. 1725 at lording n.1 3.
A lord, a noble; spec. a young, minor, or inferior lord. Also (esp. in earlier use) as a form of address. Cf. lording n.1 1, 2.
