(The title of) the chief officer of the British Royal Navy.In earlier use this officer was referred to as High Admiral or Lord Admiral (see High Admiral n. 1a, Lord Admiral n. at lord n. and int. Compounds 2). The office dates from the late 14th cent. and conferred jurisdiction over maritime affairs. The Lord High Admiral had military command by virtue of being additionally appointed Captain General of Our Fleets and Seas. By the 16th cent. the functions of the office had become too extensive for a single officer, and were largely delegated to a committee. The office was abolished in 1964 when control of the navy passed to the Ministry of Defence. The title is now held by the British monarch.
