Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit abhinaya.
Etymology: < Sanskrit abhinaya (e.g. in the title of the undated Abhinaya Darpaṇa translated in quot. 1917), verbal noun of abhinī- to lead towards, bring near, to mime (something), to convey by posture and gesture < abhi- to, towards, upon ( < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ἀμϕι- : see amphi- prefix) + nī- to lead.
