Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lixīvium.
Etymology: < classical Latin lixīvium lye, use as noun of neuter of lixīvius , variant of lixīvus (adjective) made into lye < post-classical Latin lixa water, lye (Nonius Marcellus, perhaps 4th cent.; < the same base as classical Latin liquēre : see liquid adj.) + classical Latin -īvus -ive suffix. Compare classical Latin lixīvia lye, use as noun of the feminine of lixīvius , adjective (compare lessive n.).In sense 2 apparently with allusion to the appearance and toxicity of the boiling alkaline solutions used for laundry.
1. Water containing alkaline salts leached from wood ashes, lye; (more widely) any solution obtained by leaching and esp. used for washing or soaking. Now chiefly historical.
