单词 livyer
释义

livyern.

Brit. /ˈlɪvjə/, U.S. /ˈlɪvjər/, Canadian English /ˈlɪvjər/
Forms: 1800s liv'ere, 1800s– liveyer, 1800s– liveyere, 1800s– livier, 1800s– livyere, 1900s– livvyer, 1900s– livyer, 1900s– livyre.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: liver n.2
Etymology: Originally a variant of liver n.2 (compare β. forms at that entry), with semantic specialization. Compare livier n., which is likewise originally a variant of liver n.2, and compare also the β. forms at lover n.2Alternatively, it has frequently been suggested that the word denotes a person who ‘lives here’ and derives < live v.1 + here adv., or that it is connected with livery n. or its French etymon, but both suggestions are very unlikely, and the former is almost certainly a folk etymology.
Canadian.
(a) A permanent settler or resident of coastal Newfoundland (esp. as opposed to visiting British fishermen). (b) A permanent settler or resident of the coast of Labrador (as opposed to visiting Newfoundland fishermen).
