Any of various azo pigment dyestuffs, many of which are the salts of diazo coupling compounds of β-naphthol and aromatic amino-sulphonic acids. Lithol red, any of various salts of the diazo coupling compound of 2-naphthylamine-1-sulphonic acid with β-naphthol, used as red pigments of moderate colour fastness. Formerly a proprietary name in the U.S.

Lakes & Precipitated Pigments xii. 146 Lithol red being the most profitable of all the bright pigment reds, as regards such desirable qualities as strength, price and reasonable fastness to light in full shades, it is made in larger quantities than any other pigment red.
