Etymology: < post-classical Latin limicola (see limicole n.) + -ous suffix (compare -colous comb. form), originally after scientific Latin Limicolae (see limicole n.). Compare earlier terricolous adj., and also slightly later limicoline adj.

Chiefly Zoology.

Mud-loving, mud-dwelling; inhabiting or frequenting mud or the shoreline; spec. designating a limicoline bird or worm. Cf. limicole adj., limicoline adj.
