Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abettour.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman abettour, abettor, abbettour person who incites another to unlawful action, supporter in a spurious legal action (both early 14th cent.) < abeter abet v. + -our -or suffix, -our suffix. Compare post-classical Latin abettor (c1285 in a British source). Compare later abetter n.As a legal term, this word is more usual than abetter n.
