Geology.

A porphyritic volcanic rock composed essentially of phenocrysts of augite plus iron or iron–titanium oxide minerals in a dark-coloured matrix. Also: a pyroxenite consisting chiefly of augite.

Dölter] gives to younger eruptive rocks which consist mainly of augite and magnetite in a glassy basis, but as this term is applied quite differently by Dana and Sterry Hunt, it would be desirable to adopt some other name, such as ‘augitite’.

1903 A. Geikie Text-bk. Geol. (ed. 4) I. 240 Augitite is the name given to another volcanic rock consisting essentially of augite and magnetite in a glassy base.

1904 T. C. Chamberlin & R. D. Salisbury Geol. I. vii. 398 Closely allied to the peridotites are rocks which are made up largely of a single basic mineral, as augitite, pyroxenite, hornblendite, rocks essentially formed of the minerals augite, pyroxene, and hornblende respectively.

1989 A. F. Park in D. R. Bowes Encycl. Igneous & Metamorphic Petrol. 492/2 Pyroxenites may also be named according to the particular pyroxene species present, e.g., augitite or augitolite, bronzitite, diallagite,..where such a phase constitutes >90% of the rocks.

2008 J. B. Dawson Gregory Rift Valley & Neogene–Recent Volcanoes of N. Tanzania (Geol. Soc. Mem. No. 33) vii. 51/1 Augitite, in which abundant phenocrysts of titanaugite and rarer perovskite and sodalite, are set in a matrix of nepheline or analcime, perovskite and magnetite.
