Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abettement.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman abetement, abettement, abbettement urging, prompting (late 12th cent.), machination, contrivance (1295 or earlier), incitement to unlawful action (c1404 or earlier) < abeter abet v. + -ment -ment suffix. Compare post-classical Latin abettamentum instigation (from early 14th cent. in British sources).In α. forms by confusion of the prefix with a- prefix3, an- prefix1 (see discussion at the latter entry). In sense 3 perhaps independently < abet v. + -ment suffix (compare abet v. 3).
