Inflections: Plural (rare (compare makuta n.)) likuta.
Origin: A borrowing from a Bantu language.
Etymology: < a Bantu language of the Congo region, e.g. Lingala likútá < li- , singular class prefix + -kútá (probably ultimately < Kongo nkúta package, crop, provisions, etc.). Compare very slightly earlier makuta n. Compare also earlier macute n.An alternative suggestion that the stem is borrowed from a Nupe word said to mean ‘stone’ cannot be substantiated.
Now historical.
A former monetary unit of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and subsequently Zaire, introduced in 1967, equivalent to one-hundredth of a zaire and consisting of 100 sengi. See also the plural form makuta n. Cf. zaire n., sengi n.The zaire was replaced by the Congolese franc (divided into 100 centimes) in 1997 (when the name of the country reverted to the Democratic Republic of the Congo).
