Etymology: < like adj. + -wise comb. form. Compare (with inflected first element) Middle Low German līker wīs (phrase, also tō līker wīs ), līkerwīs (adverb), both in sense ‘in the same manner’, and ( < Middle Low German) Old Swedish likervis , likavis (Swedish likervis ), Old Danish ligervis , ligevis (Danish ligervis ), and also the Germanic forms cited at ylikewise adv. Compare alikewise adv., ylikewise adv., and in like wise adv.
1. In a like manner. Now usually in to do likewise: to do the same. Cf. in like wise adv.In to do likewise after Luke 10:37.
