Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: auditory adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < aud- (in auditory adj.) + -ist suffix, after French auditif, noun (1886 or earlier). Compare earlier audile n. Compare visualist n. 1.French auditif (noun), a specific use of auditif auditive adj., was used in this sense by A. Binet, who worked under J.-M. Charcot.
Psychology and Education. Now disused.
