Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin linguiformis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin linguiformis (1559 or earlier) < classical Latin lingua tongue (see lingua n.) + -formis -form comb. form2. Compare French linguiforme (1641 or earlier; rare before late 18th cent.).In forms linguaeform and linguaform with alteration after the genitive singular and nominative singular forms, respectively, of classical Latin lingua.
Chiefly Botany, Anatomy, and Zoology.
Tongue-shaped; = lingulate adj. 1.
