Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lingua.
Etymology: < classical Latin lingua tongue (see lingua n.). Compare linguo- comb. form.Found in a small number of formations, exemplified below, from the second half of the 17th cent. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin.
