Etymology: < Italian lira, a contracted form of Latin lībra pound: see libra n.
1. The name of an Italian silver coin; the unit of monetary value in Italy until the adoption of the euro (Euro n.2 1a) in January 1999. The lira ceased to be legal tender when euro coins and banknotes were introduced in 2002.
