Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Lette.
Etymology: < German Lette (noun) Latvian person (Middle High German lette ), ultimately < Latvian latvis (see Latvian adj. and n.) or an unattested variant with e in the first syllable, perhaps via a form in Livonian, an extinct Finnic language closely related to Estonian. Compare French †lette (1765 or earlier denoting a Latvian person, 1846 or earlier denoting the Latvian language), and also post-classical Latin Lettus (1562 or earlier), Letton- , Letto (13th cent.), French letton (1786 or earlier denoting a Latvian person, 1822 or earlier denoting the Latvian language). Compare Latvian n. With the use in sense 1, compare earlier Lettonian n., Letto n.; with the use in sense 2, compare earlier Lettic n., Lettish n.
1. A member of a Baltic people, living mainly in Latvia; a Latvian. Now rare.Latvian has been the usual term since the country became an independent republic in 1918.
