Origin: Formed within English, as an acronym. Etymon: English local exchange (or employment) trading system.
Etymology: Invented name, later rationalized as an acronym < the initial letters of local exchange (or employment) trading system.‘We had LETS and LETSystem before we chose words to match the letters, but that is a minor historical note, and rarely believed.’ (Michael Linton, founder of the system, in correspondence to the OED, 1995).
Originally Canadian.
A self-regulating economic network, which allows its users (individuals, businesses, etc.) to issue their own currency and to engage in transactions recorded as a system of accounts; also more fully LETSystem and variants. By extension: applied to any local system in which goods or services are traded by barter.
