Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin autocratrix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin autocratrix (1737 or earlier: see note), feminine form corresponding to autocrator autocrator n. (see -trix suffix), after Russian samoderžica (see autocrat n.). Compare later autocratress n., autocratrice n.Post-classical Latin autocratrix is attested in Russian and continental sources as the title of several Russian empresses, apparently earliest as a title of Empress Anna Ioannovna (1693–1740, Empress from 1730).
Now chiefly historical.
