Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Or (iii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French autocratrice ; Latin autocratrix ; autocrator n., -trice suffix.
Etymology: Either < French autocratrice (1739; originally and chiefly as the title of several 18th-cent. empresses of Russia) or its probable etymon post-classical Latin autocratrix autocratrix n. (see -trice suffix), or independently < autocrator n.: see -trice suffix. Compare earlier autocratrix n., slightly later autocratress n., and also later autocrat n.
Obsolete.
