Originally: a glass bulb containing a wire filament inside a vacuum or inert gas, designed to provide light when electricity is passed through the filament to make it incandescent, typically by inserting it into a socket through which current is supplied. Now also: any of several similar compact devices designed to produce light when an electric current is applied, such as a folded or coiled fluorescent discharge tube (cf. fluorescent lamp n. at fluorescent adj.
