Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, code n.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + code n.The term is attributed to A. E. Glennie (1925–2003), British computer scientist. Compare:1980 Ann. Hist. Computing 2 156/2 In 1952 Glennie devised an automatic coding system to try to alleviate the language difficulty of programming the Mark I. Glennie called the system autocode; this appears to be the origin of the term.
Computing. Now chiefly historical.
A programming language that can be used to generate machine code in another language.Originally introduced as a name for the specific assembly language developed for the Manchester Mark 1 computer.
