Compare post-classical Latin autocephalus (1604 or earlier as noun denoting an Orthodox bishop who is not subject to the authority of an archbishop or external patriarch, c800 in a British source as adjective), French autocéphale (1680 as adjective, 1721 as noun), both < Greek.
