单词 lesses
释义

lessesn.

Brit. /ˈlɛsᵻz/, U.S. /ˈlɛsəz/
Forms: late Middle English– lesses, 1600s leasses.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French leisses.
Etymology: < Middle French leisses, laisses (plural) dung of a wild animal (c1382 in the passage translated in quot. a1425; French †laisses ) < leisser , laisser to leave (see lease v.3).Compare Old French lesse de foire (of an animal) action of leaving excrement (beginning of the 13th cent.), Middle French, French laissées dung of a wild animal (1573), use as noun of the feminine plural of the past participle of laisser . A Middle French form leissees is also sometimes cited for the work translated in quot. a1425, but this is probably a (scribal or editorial) error for leisses.
Hunting. Now rare (only in historical contexts).
The dung of a predatory animal, such as a wild boar, wolf, or bear.
