Astronautics and Science Fiction.
A structure incorporating a large, very thin sheet of reflective material, designed to use the pressure of (esp. solar) radiation to provide the propulsive force for a spacecraft. Cf. solar sail n. at solar adj. and n.1 Compounds 3.Spacecraft propelled by solar-powered sails were first deployed in 2010. Many technical proposals have been made for sails powered by lasers or masers, which could allow travel beyond the solar system.
