Etymology: < scientific Latin leprosus, specific use of post-classical Latin leprosus leprous adj.; compare -ose suffix1.Scientific Latin leprosus was used systematically by Linnaeus in the classification of lichens in Species plantarum (1753 ), following earlier descriptive uses by e.g. Ray (1724) and Dillenius (1741). Compare earlier leprose , variant of leprous adj.
Botany.
Having a scaly or powdery appearance; lepidote; esp. designating crustose lichens in which the surface of the thallus is granular or powdery.
