In γ. forms with apostrophe omitted.So called from the first recognized outbreak of the disease, which occurred among people attending an American Legion convention in Philadelphia in July 1976; see quot. 19761.
A severe form of pneumonia, often occurring in clusters or small outbreaks, caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella (esp. L. pneumophila), which are typically transmitted in droplets of water from contaminated plumbing or ventilation systems.
