Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymon: French *le jeu de mai.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < an unattested Middle French *le jeu de mai < le the + jeu game (see jeu de dames n.) + de de prep. + mai May n.2; compare Middle French le moys de mai as the name of a dance (late 15th cent.), lit. ‘the month of May’.In quot. 1947 apparently revived from Skelton's use.
Now historical and rare.
