Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French audax.
Etymology: < French audax (1904, originally also denoting a cyclist who has completed such an event, who was regarded as audacious) < Italian audax , in the same senses (1902 or earlier; apparently originally with reference to a long distance ride from Rome to Naples first held in 1897) < classical Latin audāx bold, daring (see audacious adj.).
Cycling.
A type of long-distance road cycling event in which participants navigate a specified route within predetermined time limits. Frequently attributive.
