Etymology: < German Lebensraum space to live, habitat (1809 or earlier; mid 18th cent. in sense ‘life span’; 1901 in geopolitical use: see note) < Lebens- , combining form of Leben life n. + Raum space (see room n.1). Compare earlier life-space n. at life n. Compounds 1a(b).In plural forms after the German plural form Lebensräume. The geopolitical use of the German word was introduced by F. Ratzel in a social Darwinist context ( Der Lebensraum: eine biogeographische Studie, in K Bücher, K.V. Fricker, et al. Festgaben f. Albert Schäffle (1901) 101-89), denoting the territory needed by a population to sustain itself. During the Weimar Republic, it became part of wider nationalist discourse and was subsequently adopted as a key concept of Nazi foreign policy.
A natural habitat; spec. territory which a group, state, or nation believes or asserts is needed for its natural development or expansion (also as a count noun). Also in extended use. Cf. life-space n. at life n. Compounds 1a(b), living space n. 1b.Associated chiefly with the aggressively expansionist ideology and policies of Nazi Germany.
