Etymology: Either < leaven v. + -ed suffix1 or < leaven n. + -ed suffix2. Compare Anglo-Norman leveiné (13th cent. in pain leveiné ) and also Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French levé (c1200), specific use as adjective of past participle of lever to raise (see leve v.3 and compare leaven v.).
That has or have been leavened (literally or figuratively); made with a leaven.
