Etymology: < Dutch laveeren, in 17th cent. also loevéren , Middle Dutch laeveren , loveren , < French (16th cent.) loveer , now louvoyer (for the suffix in Dutch compare domineren domineer v.), < lof windward (of Dutch or Low German origin: see luff n.1). The Dutch word has been adopted in other languages as German lavieren, Swedish lofvera, Danish lavere.
Nautical. Obsolete except in literary use.
intransitive. To beat to windward; to tack.
