Etymology: Probably < Middle French lavatoire (see lavatory n.).Alternatively the word could show a variant of lavatory n. (although this seems otherwise rare in Scots at this date), or a borrowing directly < post-classical Latin lavatorium. Perhaps compare also post-classical Latin lavatura water that has been used for washing (6th cent. with reference to dirty water, frequently from 12th cent. in British sources with reference to water that has been used for sacred purposes).

Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
