Etymology: < Anglo-Norman letrure, letterure, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French letreure, lettreure, Anglo-Norman and Middle French lettrure, Middle French lectreure knowledge acquired by reading or studying books, learning, erudition (first half of the 12th cent.), writings, literature (late 12th cent.), in Anglo-Norman also writing (late 12th cent.), probably < classical Latin litterātūra literature n. with regular loss of the intervocalic -t- in Old French, but apprehended early on as an internal French formation (as if < letre , lettre letter n.1 + -ure -ure suffix1). Compare earlier letter n.1 5 and later literature n.With the form lectrure, compare the etymological note at letter n.1 In forms litrere, litterure (which are unparalleled in French) influenced by classical Latin litterātūra literature n. and littera letter n.1
