Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French lettrisme.
Etymology: < French lettrisme (although this is first attested slightly later: 1947 in the title of a work by Isidore Isou) < lettre letter n.1 + -isme -ism suffix.
A movement in French art and literature characterized by a repudiation of meaning and the use of letters (sometimes invented) as isolated units.The movement, which was influenced by both Dadaism and Surrealism, was founded by the Romanian-born poet Isidore Isou (1925–2007).
