Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Letto.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Letto (see Lett n.). Compare later Lett n. and also Letto- comb. form.Compare also occasional early uses of Letto denoting the country:a1556 R. Chancellor in R. Hakluyt Princ. Navigations (1599) I. 239 He leaueth on the borders of Liefland fortie thousand men, and vpon the borders of Letto 60 thousand men.1646 T. Johnson Plea for Free-mens Liberties sig. A3 Out and from any our Dominions through the Sound, into the Realmes..of Norway, Swethia, Poland, and the territories of the same Kingdoms, as also into Letto, and Liefland.
