单词 | lettice ruff |
释义 | † lettice ruffn. Obsolete. rare. Probably: a person wearing a ruff with flattened curves resembling those of a lettuce leaf. N.E.D. (1902) defines this as ‘a person wearing a ruff or collar of this fur’, taking the first element as an instance of lettice n. (compare earlier lettice bonnet n., lettice cap n.). However, it seems more probable that the first element is a variant of lettuce n., with reference to the ruffled appearance of lettuce leaves (cf. cabbage ruff n. at cabbage n.1 Compounds 2 and note at lettice cap n. 2).
