Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic hleypa to curdle (milk) by heating lightly, specific use of hleypa to cause to leap, to start, to put in motion, representing a causative formation < the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic hlaupa leap v.), with the phonology influenced by subsequent association with leap v.With the suggested early Scandinavian etymon compare also Norwegian løypa to put in motion, to curdle (milk), to simmer, Old Swedish löpa to cause (a fluid) to run, to drive (deer in a hunt) (Swedish löpa), Old Danish løpæ to curdle (milk) (Danish løbe).
Scottish (now chiefly northern) and English regional (northern).
