Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin latrōcinium.

Etymology: < classical Latin latrōcinium robbery with violence, band of robbers (see latrociny n.), in post-classical Latin also used figuratively with reference to the council of Ephesus (5th cent.).Pope Leo I describes the council of Ephesus as not a legal assembly but robbery with violence (non iudicio, sed latrocinio ); this contrast of latrōcinium and iūdicium legal proceedings, trial, court (see judicious adj.) is found in earlier Latin authors and already in Cicero ( Pro Roscio 61): confitere huc ea spe venisse quod putares hic latrocinium, non iudicium futurum ‘confess that you came here with the hope that there would be a robbery here, not a trial.’
