单词 leat
释义

leatn.

Brit. /liːt/, U.S. /lit/
Forms: Middle English lete, 1500s–1600s leate, 1600s let, 1600s lett, 1600s– leat, 1800s– leet.
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English gelǣt.
Etymology: Probably the reflex (with aphesis) of Old English gelǣt (in wæter-gelǣt water leat n.). Compare leet n.1The simplex Old English gelǣt coming together, junction (see leet n.1) is only attested with reference to roads and ways; it is uncertain whether quot. c1340 (a late copy of a 10th-cent. charter) should be taken to imply currency in Old English in the sense ‘water channel’, especially as the text bears signs of later revision. Perhaps compare early modern German las , lässe , in sense ‘stretch of water of a specified length (between fish traps)’ (1530), German regional (Switzerland) lass small water channel. Apparently attested slightly earlier in the place name Langelete , Wiltshire (1235; now Longleat), usually assumed to refer to a mill leat in this location. In quots. 1279 and c1340 showing forms reflecting feminine agreement (with the reflex of Old English þǣre , feminine dative singular form of the definite article); see discussion at leet n.1 In modern regional use the word is found chiefly in the south-west, although a wider distribution in earlier times is suggested by place-name evidence; compare the field names Whithlete (1319) and le Oldletes (1395), both attested in Cambridgeshire.
An artificial channel for the conveyance of water, esp. for agricultural or industrial purposes. Also occasionally: a natural watercourse; a stream, a river.See also mill-leat n., water leat n.In quots. 1279, 1330 in surnames.
