Etymology: < late adj.1 + -ed suffix1. Compare belated adj.Compare Old English (rare) latod extended, protracted (apparently < Old English latian to be slow, linger, delay ( < the same base as late adj.1) + -ed suffix1).
1. poetic. Esp. of a traveller: overtaken by night; benighted. Obsolete.
