释义

Languedocn.1

Brit. /ˈlɒŋɡədɒk/, /ˈlɑːŋɡədɒk/, U.S. /lɑŋˈdɔk/, /lɑŋˈdɑk/
Forms: 1600s–1700s Languedock, 1600s– Languedoc.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Languedoc.
Etymology: < French Languedoc (late 14th cent. in Middle French as one word; earlier in Old French as Lengue d'Oc : see note at langue d'oc n.2), the name of a former province of southern France, which extended from the Rhône valley to the northern foothills of the eastern Pyrenees, and is now part of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, transferred use of langue d'oc langue d'oc n.2 Compare Old Occitan Lenga d'Oc, Lengua d'Oc (both first half of the 14th cent.), Catalan Llenguadoch (second half of the 15th cent. as †Lenguadoch), Spanish Lenguadoc (1386 as Lengua doc), all denoting the territory. With Languedoc wine compare French vin du Languedoc (late 16th cent. or earlier in Middle French). French Languedoc denoting the wine is apparently not attested until later (1795). N.E.D. (1901) gives the pronunciation as (lāṅgdok) /lɑ̃ɡdɔk/.
Also Languedoc wine. A wine produced in Languedoc in the south of France, either with reference to the former province, or to the modern region of Languedoc-Rousillion, which covers the larger part of the ancient province.
