单词 langra
释义

langran.

Brit. /ˈlaŋɡrə/, /ˈlɑːŋɡrə/, U.S. /ˈlɑŋ(ɡ)rə/
Forms: 1800s– langra, 1900s– langda.
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi lãgṛā.
Etymology: < Hindi lãgṛā, of uncertain origin, perhaps < Hindi lãgṛā lame (ultimately < late Sanskrit laṅga lame), although the semantic connection is unclear; it may have referred to a defect in the original cultivar. It has been suggested that the word derives from use of Hindi lãgṛā (as noun in sense ‘lame person’) as the nick-name of the farmer who is said to have developed the cultivar, but there appears to be no substantiation for this. With the variation between d and r in English compare the discussion at bada adj.
More fully langra mango. A variety of mango ( Mangifera indica) producing a fruit with a pale green skin, chiefly cultivated in northern India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan; a fruit or (as a mass noun) the fruit of this variety.
