Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek αὐτόπιστος , -y suffix3.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek αὐτόπιστος credible in itself ( < ancient Greek αὐτο- auto- comb. form1 + πιστός trustworthy, credible: see pistomesite n.) + -y suffix3, after French autopistie (1841 in the passage translated in quot. 1842). Compare axiopisty n.Compare the following slightly earlier adaptation of the French noun into English in form autopistia:1841 tr. S. R. L. Gaussen Theopneustia v. 361 The ancient church..does not only attribute to her sacred authors the axiopistia, that is to say, a credibility fully merited; but also the autopistia, which is, a right to be believed, independently of their circumstances.
