Etymology: < lama n.¹ + -ic suffix, originally (in α. forms) after French †lamique (1769 in a work by C. de Pauw, the author of the text translated in quot. 1795, now rare). Compare French lamaïque (1783 or earlier), and also (with different suffix) German †lamaisch (1785 or earlier). Compare earlier Lamaism n. and Lamaist n.

Buddhism.

Of, relating to, or characteristic of those forms of Mahayana Buddhism in which lamas play a significant role, such as those practised in Tibet and Mongolia; designating an adherent of such a form, e.g. a Tibetan or Mongolian Buddhist. Cf. Lamaist adj.
