单词 lapwing
释义

lapwingn.

/ˈlapwɪŋ/
Forms: Old English hléapewince, Middle English lhapwynche, Middle English–1600s lapwinge, lapwynge, lap-, lappewin(c)ke, lappewynke, (Middle English leepwynke, Middle English lapwinch, lapwynche, 1600s lapwinc(k)le), Middle English– lapwing. Also 1500s lappoint n.
Etymology: Old English hléapewince , strong feminine, < hleápan to leap + *winc- to totter, waver (so Old High German winkan , Middle High German winken , also to wink; compare Old English wincian to wink. The bird was named from the manner of its flight. The current form is in part due to popular etymology, which connected the word with lap v.2 and wing n. (see quot. 1617 at main sense).
A well-known bird of the plover family, Vanellus vulgaris or cristatus, common in the temperate parts of the Old World. Called also peewit n., from its peculiar cry. Its eggs were the ‘plovers' eggs’ of the London markets. Allusions are frequent to its crested head, to its wily method of drawing away a visitor from its nest, and to the notion that the newly hatched lapwing runs about with its head in the shell.
