Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French l'affaire.
Etymology: < French l'affaire (followed by a proper name; not dated in this sense in dictionaries of the language) < la the + affaire affair n. in its specific sense development ‘scandal associated with a person or organization’. Compare French l'affaire Dreyfus (1894). Compare earlier affair n. 3d, affaire n.
Used before a proper name (after French construction) to denote a scandal associated with the specified person, organization, etc.
