Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., tress n.
Etymology: < the genitive of lady n. + the plural of tress n., although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural; so called on account of the supposed resemblance (in sense 1) of the twisted flower spike and (in sense 2) of the spikelets to plaited long hair. Compare earlier lady's traces n.
1. Any of various orchids of either of the genera Goodyera and (esp.) Spiranthes, which are widespread throughout north temperate regions and have a twisted flower spike bearing small, white, tubular flowers. Frequently with distinguishing word.
