单词 ladys seal
释义

lady's sealn.

Brit. /ˌleɪdɪz ˈsiːl/, U.S. /ˌleɪdiz ˈsi(ə)l/
Forms:

α. 1500s layde's seale, 1500s–1600s ladies seale, 1600s– ladies seal, 1700s– lady's seal, 1900s– ladies' seal.

β. 1700s– lady seal.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., seal n.2
Etymology: < the genitive of lady n. + seal n.2, although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural. In β. forms either < lady n. + seal n.2 (perhaps originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element: see discussion at lady n.) or simply by assimilation (and subsequent reanalysis) in the α. forms. The semantic motivation for the compound is not entirely clear: in sense 2 probably so called on account of the sticky juice of the plant (compare quot. 1617); in sense 3 perhaps originally an alteration of Solomon's seal n. in order to avoid connotations of magic (for suggestions as to the origin of the second element see discussion at that entry). Compare post-classical Latin sigillum Sancte Marie (a1250, 14th cent. in British sources), sigillum Beate Marie (1634 in a British source), both in sense ‘black bryony’. Compare earlier Our Lady's seal n. at Our Lady n. Compounds 2b.
